THE NEW GUY

When I started my career as a new grad, I can’t count how many times I was in a conversation that I had no clue what was going on. Everyone was speaking English, but it sounded like a different language to me. Even worse, when I did understand the words, I didn’t know what to do. 

At my first job as an RF Engineer, my boss had asked me to choose an antenna for a CDMA site (note the year, the Internet was not the resource it is now). I checked online for a CDMA antenna, I went to my university textbook to only find equations, no information on how to choose an antenna. After a week, I gave up and asked my boss for assistance and he gave me a two-inch thick catalogue. I flipped through the catalogue aimlessly because I could not find ‘CDMA’ antennas. 

THE PROBLEM

The problem I had was one of fundamental knowledge. I didn’t know that antennas were frequency dependent; I didn’t know the topology of the site I was choosing for; I didn’t know the right questions to ask!  

LESSON LEARNED 

That experience taught me an important lesson: in order to succeed in this industry, you need targeted training that can be directly applied to the job, and that was not available at that time.
